Lawrence Durrell is best known as the author of the Alexandria Quartet, a cycle of novels published between 1957 and 1960, chronicling the lives of an ensemble cast of diverse characters immediately prior to and during the Second World War. In his 'investigation of modern love', Durrell constructed a novel in multiple dimensions that continues to fascinate readers to this day, but his work extends far beyond the four volumes of the Quartet. In addition to other novels, Durrell was a playwright, poet, essayist, travel writer, and humourist.
