The Short Stories: A Cross Reference
There are roughly sixty short stories in the Allingham canon.
Many have been published with varying titles on different occasions,
in magazines, newspapers, or anthologies. The following list
is an attempt to reconcile all of the differing names and appearances.
While the list is based upon my own collection, for several volumes
which I do not own I have had to rely on Barry Pike's excellent
guide in Campion's Career. In some cases, even Pike's
guide has had to be updated (it was published in 1988), owing
to the publication of The Return of Mr Campion and Other Stories
in 1989, which includes several previously unpublished pieces.
Additional difficulties abound: two of the collections have
the same title (Mr Campion and Others), but were published
eleven years apart and have significantly different contents.
Another collection (The Allingham Case-Book) now exists
solely under its newer title (Mr Campion's Lucky Day and Other
Stories). Further, some stories appear in multiple anthologies
under different titles, and some have variant titles which do
not appear in any known anthology. The following lists are an
attempt to set all of these issues straight, and I hope that
they will succeed to some degree.
For the time being, I have not actively attempted to track
down the actual first publication of all sixty-odd stories, usually
in newspapers or magazines, although I have included that information
when it has appeared readily to hand (ie: been noted carefully
in the collection, as in The Return of Mr Campion).
In the interests of thoroughness, I have also included the
novellas, as some of them form the anchors of other short story
collections (for example, Mr Campion: Criminologist, or
Wanted, Someone Innocent).
Using the menu at left, view the stories by their first published
title, with alternate titles referenced, or by the collection
in which the story appeared, with reference to later (or earlier)
publication.
For the sake of clarity, I have omitted introductory and prefatory
materials, but I have included any Campion-related essays or
other short works.
This effort should be considered a work in progress. If you
should happen to see any obvious mistakes, please feel free to
drop me a line.
