LIST OF QUERIES AND UPDATES TO THE ALLEY ANCESTORS LINEAGE REQUEST
OF 1998
MARILYN CANFIELD / 2008 W. 27TH ST. S. / WICHITA, KANSAS 67217:
Marilyn has provided documentation that proves Thomas Alley, Jr. &
Nancy Alley of
Virginia are the parents of James Alley of Virginia who married Susannah
Kelsey of Alley Ancestors book, Page #’s: (VA-47 & VA-48).
Thomas Alley, Jr. & Nancy will take over the 12th generation
from Sir John Alley.
Thomas Alley & Susannah Howerton would still be the 11th generation
from Sir John Alley. (Alley Ancestors Books Page # (VA-10 & VA-47)
James Alley & Susannah Kelsey will take over the 13th generation
from Sir John Alley.
PATRICIA ALLEY-GADDIE / 401 TERRACE DR, / WELLINGTON, KANSAS 67152:
Marilyn, thank you for providing the information on Thomas, Jr. &
Nancy Alley.
Anyone who has information pertaining to Thomas Alley, Jr. & Nancy
Alley, please send to my address. This will help clarify any
confusion to their relationship to the family. This is also
my direct family lineage, as well as Marilyn Canfields, and many
other Alley Ancestors.
MRS. A. W. CAPAMAGIAN-HANSEN / 2 ELEVENTH AVENUE / TAURANGA, NEW ZEALAND
PARTS OF A LETTER WRITTEN, 4 NOV. 1997 AS FOLLOWS: : “ My grandfather
was Henry Alley, born Ireland 1826, and died New Zealand 1912, being one
of four sons and three daughters, all being children of Captain John Alley.
On the local scene I have been able to research and document quite
a lot of historical information about my grandfather, Henry; and his descendants.
We, (that is my family) have a book ‘Alley Ancestors’ by Gene Alley,
and it is an excellent record. However I would like to learn more
about the human aspect of them, including their wives - what they did,
how they lived, and other personal activities in which they were involved.
Insofar as Alleys in New Zealand are concerned, I am endeavoring to
complete a short biography of each of the descendants of Henry, as well
as Henry himself, and hope to have this as complete as possible.
At the same time I want to learn more about my own direct antecedents,
particularly on the female side. In this regard you may be able to
help me by providing information as to where this would be available.
In addition to Alley family who have been active in New Zealand, I
did visit with Rewi Alley in China in the early 1980s, and much has been
written about him. He was my second cousin and though born in NZ
in 1898, went to China in 1927 where he lived with distinction until his
death there in 1987. I would dearly love to meet up with you and other
members of your family, but rather doubt if this will be possible as time
marches on and you are some distance away.”

QUERY WRITTEN IN LETTER, SEPT. 22, 1997 AS FOLLOWS: “I have one
query and that is do you have any sources proving the father/son relationship
of Joshua Alley and Alexander Alley (Alley Ancestors Page #: ME-11?
I have sources of the other 6 children but not Alexander. Joshua
was the Revolutionary War soldier, DAR cert# 370124 and 370125. Any
information about this relationship would be
appreciated.”
JUST A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR ABOUT SENDING QUERIES: Please include
the page number from the Alley Ancestors book, where the name of the ancestor
is located. This will make your questions much easier to answer.
Thanks again to all of you who have sent in Alley Ancestor lineage information.
Maybe someday there will be a sequel to the Alley Ancestor by Gene Alley
to include updates to lineage’s, past, future, and ongoing.

ALLEY NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 1997
Annette Daigle of 502 E. Walker St. Jefferson, Texas sent
an interesting package filled with advertisements on their city that was
co-founded by Daniel Nelson Alley, Jr. from Indiana, previously from the
Virginia area. It might be an interesting spot for a family reunion,
if anyone would like to volunteer to organize one there. His house
is still standing, and tours are given around Christmas time. The
town has over 30 Bed & Breakfast Inns, and lake Caddo is near by.
(The Daniel Alley house is called OAK ALLEY, circa 1851. The
style of it is Greek Revival.)

COMMENTS:
C. John Alley of 1321 North Shore Road, Norfolk Virginia 23505-3058
in an Aug. 13, 1996 letter has written us the following:
"William L. Smith, whose mother was an Alley, and who has been a close
friend since our Navy days together in Panama Canal Zone, forwarded a copy
of your July issue. In it, you asked for comment re: Scotch-Irish.
My mother's great grandfather, Edward Scott Hagen and his wife, Mary Templeton,
reportedly were born in Scotland. With, apparently, many other Scots,
they migrated to Ireland. They migrated, further, to New York in
1840's. They called themselves "Scotch-Irish".
There may be other accounts in reference books in libraries, but my
parents always told me that I was of Scotch-Irish,
English, Dutch, and French lineage." Edited for use.
A REUNION was held at Coldwater, Kansas on Memorial Monday at the American
Legion Building on Main Street from 12-4pm with many Alley's attending
from South Central, South West Kansas, Northern Oklahoma and Texas.
Vernie Smith,officiating.
Gene and Sarah Alley, Dick and Gwen Lucas, Dean and Faye Alley, and
Donel and Patricia Gaddie, Katie and Don, Jr. had a get-together at Wellington
of this year. They all enjoyed a wonderful experience of sharing
family traditions.
OTHER ALLEY PLACES OF INTEREST: ALLEY SPRINGS & THE OLD RED
MILL, located in Missouri's Ozark Heritage Region, West of Eminence, Mo.
Many scenic attractions to see and enjoy. Betty Berggren say's in her letter
of Oct. 5, 1996 to the Alley Ancestors that: " The Alley Springs
is an 80,800,000 gallon springs. It is the seventh largest spring
in Missouri. The Big Springs which is not too far from Alley Springs, is
the largest in the United States and is the ninth largest in the world.
Alley Springs is beautiful, and is unique in that it has a walking path
around the pool area where the springs come out of the hill. The
sinkhole is quite a distance from the springs and the researchers have
found only one source for sure that might feed the springs. " Thanks
Betty!

LETTER TO MEMBERS AND AT LARGE , ALLEY ANCESTORS:
It would be very wonderful if we could all get together in one place
at one time in the future. However with the busy and hectic schedules
we sometimes lead this seems almost impossible. I would like to extend
an invitation to all of you
to come to Wellington in 1998, and come for a get-together at my place.
But I will need you to all write me a short note about what would be the
best time in your schedule to come. Then I will write you all and
tell you when to come. Some possible times might be: May Day, 4th
of July, Labor Day weekend, or the first weekend in October, etc. .
Please write!
I am so excited about our family. In the past year I accepted
a position with the Wellington Public Library, as Adult Services and Family
Research Librarian. My job requires that I do family history requests,
as well as duties in the Children's and Adult library. I am also
the leader for our Junior Volunteers, and coordinate activities for this
group throughout the year. It is the most fulfilling work I have
done so far.
Thank you so much for your patience and kindness.
Sincerely,

Title: "Joan Ice always had time for children"
"By Dan Madden
STAFF WRITER
"When Joan Elsa Ice walked the hallways of the West Seattle
Family YMCA, children cheered,'There goes the Queen."
"The "Queen of the YMCA," always had time to wave back and smile.
"She'd wave her little parade wave," says YMCA youth program
director Josh Sutton. "She even had a little glow-in-the-dark star
scepter. She adored kids."
Ice worked for the West Seattle Family YMCA for 15 years.
advancing from part-time fitness coordinator to associate executive director.
She died Jan. 16 at age 55.
Here friend, Barb Vadakin, recalls that Ice always had
time for children. When Madison Middle School students were sending 50-cent
Candygrams to each other on Valentines Day, Ice, who sat on the school's
site council, bought nearly 500 Candygrams to ensure that every student
in the school received at least one. "That's the kind of person Joan
was," Vadakin recalls. "Every kid to Joan was important, and no one
ever got left out."
BEFORE SHE retired in June, Ice had earned international respect in
YMCA circles for her work with youth. "She started the teen program
in 1990 when there weren't funds available," Sutton says. She also
spearheaded the West Seattle Y's foreign-exchange programs, and hosted
numerous exchange students in her home. "She had a lot of passion
for her work and her family," Sutton recalls. Friends and family
remember Ice for her quick wit and tireless work ethic. "Her mission
in
life was to find the people who needed her and respond to their needs,"
says her sister Judy Alley.
ICE LED the Y's annual fundraising campaign, which raised $62,000 last
year alone. The Y's Health and Fitness Coordinator, Debbie Powell,
says Ice personified the YMCA's philosophy of leadership. "The YMCA
is known for taking ordinary Joes off the street and training them and
moving them up through the organization," Powell says. "Joan really
cultivated that and pushed people in their leadership skills." Friend
Randy Hieronymus says Ice's death is a "life-force
removed" from the West Seattle community. "Everything she touched
she affected so positively."
Ice leaves behind her husband Mac and their children,
Kathy and David Ice. She moved from Indiana to West Seattle with
Mac in 1967. She is also survived by sister Julane Shepard, Susan
Kendall, Judith Alley, Jane Payne and brothers John and Thomas Alley.
A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 19, at Fauntleroy Community Church
U.C.C . Those who wish may contribute to the Joan Ice-Memorial Scholarship,
West Seattle Family YMCA, 4515 36th Ave. S.W., Seattle, WA 98065.
In her eulogy Friday, Vadikan told mourners to think of
Ice when they gazed at Mount Rainier: "Strong, bold, friendly and
inviting. That was Joanie, my best friend."
Monday, September 15, 1997, "The Wichita Eagle" , Wichita Kansas, Front
page, first article exerpt as follows
Title: "EMMY SURPRISES: 'LAW & ORDER,' 'THE X-FILES':
Shoot! Our Kirstie was shot down at the Emmys Sunday night.
But I guess we can't feel too badly because she lost the award for supporting
actress in a miniseries to Diana Rigg-that's DAME Diana, folks-who won
for playing the supremely creepy and crazy Mrs. Danvers in PBS's new version
of "Rebecca."
Alley, who already has two Emmys under her belt for best
actress in comedy ("Cheers") and drama ("David's Mother") was up for playing
the crazy daughter in "The Last Don." Rigg apparently was just a little
crazier. At least, Alley has her own new show "Veronica's Closet,"
to fall back on this year (and wait for future Emmy nominations-guaranteed)."

A. (see Vicars) is suspended from his office and the Cure is deserted"
(D.R.). He was still C. in 1766 and 1781. See Aghavoe Curates.
NOTES: The meaning of the name is unknown. Previous to the Reformation
the Rectory belonged to the Priorty of St. John's till the Dissolution.
It was leased in 1541 to Walter Cowley and subsequently granted to Kilkenny
Corporation, who seem to have on a few occasions exercised the patronage.
In 1615 the V. was worth f4, the Church was waste, the Chancel on
the Vicar's part repaired, on the Rector's part ruinous (R.V.). In
1623, according to Ledwich (p. 407), Thomas Garrett was tenant of the parson's
manse land and John Baskerville (see Vicars) for the parsonage, except
the manse land. The latter got a grant for a glebe here on Aug. 10,
1634 (P. R.). In 1731 Bp. Tennison writes: "Crosses in the Churchyard
to be removed. Part of roof of Church on N. side wants shingling:
